I am now convinced that the only reason professors and teachers encourage and assign group work is because it's half (or less) of the workload on them as well.

This teacher says, you are 75% correct. We also do this because in the workplace you will need to be part of a team. Mostly, we can't stand to read another report on "the Wiki Effect"
